Where do the lessons take place?
Lessons take place at my home studio which is located in Layerthorpe, York.
What will I be learning on?
I currently teach using my Roland TD-25KV Electronic Kit which is one of the finest E-Kits on the market.
How much do lessons cost?
Lessons are priced at £24 for an hour. Depending on your schedule I can also offer 30 minute and 45 minute lessons priced at £12 and £18 accordingly. Pre-booked bulk lesson discounts are also available. Please contact me for details.
What do I need before I can start learning?
All you really need to make a start learning drums is a pair of sticks. If you don’t own your own kit yet that’s fine, I can give you plenty to be getting on with in between lessons. And when it does come time to take the plunge and buy your first set, I can advise you. Oh, and a pair of ear plugs is a must! Drums and Cymbals are loud instruments and will damage your hearing without adequate protection.
How often should I take lessons?
I recommend at least once a fortnight however weekly lessons work wonders, especially if you’re a beginner.
What age should my child be before they start having drum lessons?
I generally recommend 6/7 years and above for one on one drum kit lessons. It is of course possible to start playing much younger than this and if you want some advice on how to get started please get in touch.
I am a complete beginner, is that Ok?
Absolutely, I love teaching beginners! In your first lesson I shall teach you how to hold the sticks, and we’ll start by playing some basic rudiments. Then we’ll move onto the kit and by the end of the lesson you’ll be playing some basic beats and (hopefully) be hooked for life!
Will you teach me how to pass Graded Exams?
Yes, if you want me to. If you wish to take graded exams I can teach you the syllabus and advise you on how to apply for them.
I really like [insert band name here]. Can you teach me some of their songs?
Absolutely! Learning and playing along to songs that you like is an integral part of improving as a drummer in my opinion. As part of your practice routine I will encourage you to play along to music you enjoy. As you take more lessons with me and we develop a program that suits you, we’ll include learning songs that YOU want to learn.
Are you DBS checked?
Yes I am fully DBS checked and also a member of City of York Council’s Approved Tutors scheme. This means my lessons are regularly observed by a member of the Council to ensure my teaching is of a high standard and in a safe environment.
